Coupled Marine Ecosystem Modelling on High-Performance Computers

چکیده
Simulation of the marine environment has become an important tool across a wide range of human activities, with applications in coastal engineering, offshore industries, fisheries management, marine pollution monitoring, weather forecasting and climate research to name but a few. Hydrodynamic models have been under development for many years and have reached a high level of sophistication. However, sustainable management of the ecological resources of coastal environments demands an ability to understand and predict the behaviour of the marine ecosystem. Thus, it is highly desirable to extend the capabilities of existing models to include chemical, bio-geo-chemical and biological processes within the marine ecosystem.

15: Predicting Trophic Interactions and Habitat Utilization in the California Current Ecosystem
While specifically focusing on trophic interactions affecting habitat utilization and foraging patterns of California sea lions (CSL) in the California Current Large Marine Ecosystem (CCLME), the long-term goal of our modeling approach is to better understand and characterize biological “hotspots” (i.e., the aggregation of multiple marine organisms over multiple trophic levels) off the U.S. wes...
متن کاملHydrodynamic Modelling of Coral Reefs:Ningaloo Reef-Western Australia
As with all coral reef systems, the ecology of Ningaloo Reef is closely linked to water circulation which transport and disperse key material such as nutrients and larvae. Circulation on coral reefs may be driven by a number of forcing mechanisms including waves, tides, wind, and buoyancy effects. Surface waves interacting with reefs have long been known to dominate the currents on many coral r...
متن کاملNew Generation Shelf Flux Models
The ecological condition of the Continental Shelf is of great concern for many countries. The understanding of the integrated effects that result in the present and future situation requires answers on many research topics, such as flow modelling, including turbulence and large eddy simulation, transport processes, chemistry, ecology, etc. This paper focuses on ‘high performance computing issue...
متن کاملMolecularly Imprinted Stir Bar Sorptive Extraction Coupled with High-Performance Liquid Chromatography for Trace Analysis of Diclofenac in Different Real Samples
A novel molecularly imprinted polymer-coated stir bar has been used to selectively extract diclofenac (DFC) directly from real samples. DFC was used as template molecule for preparation of MIP coating. The effect of different parameters on the extraction efficiency were studied and the optimum conditions were established as: the absorption and desorption times were fixed at 10 min, stirring...
متن کاملIntegrated Modelling Approaches for the Management of Marine Resources
From 2006 to 2009, the Chaloupe project, focused on analysing the interactions between global change, the dynamics of exploited marine biodiversity, and the viability of fisheries in three regional systems. An important outcome of the project was to reinforce collaboration between fisheries ecologists, economists, mathematicians and computer scientists to advance an integrated approach to marin...
